Filter-Equipped Infusion Set: The “Invisible Guardian” of Intravenous Infusion Safety

Intravenous infusion is a commonly used administration method in clinical practice. As an upgraded version of ordinary infusion sets, the filter-equipped infusion set (precision filtration infusion set) has a core advantage of a built-in precision filter membrane, which can accurately intercept harmful particles in the liquid medicine, providing safety guarantee for special groups of people and high-risk drug infusion, and is widely used in various medical scenarios.

I. What is a Filter-Equipped Infusion Set?

It is a special intravenous infusion consumable, composed of an intravenous needle, infusion tube, drip chamber, flow regulator and precision filtration device. Its core is the filter membrane — with a pore size as low as 0.2~5 microns (15 microns for ordinary infusion sets), it intercepts impurities through physical sieving without affecting the efficacy of the medicine. The filter membrane is made of medical-grade materials, with good biocompatibility and low adsorption. Its operation is consistent with that of ordinary infusion sets, and it has strong compatibility.

II. Core Functions

Insoluble particles in the liquid medicine may cause adverse reactions such as phlebitis and vascular embolism. The filter-equipped infusion set can accurately intercept these particles, filter air bubbles to reduce the risk of infection, reduce drug adsorption to ensure stable efficacy, and alleviate the irritation caused by drug infusion.

III. Common Types and Application Scenarios

It is classified according to filter pore size and function, targeting different needs:

1. By Filter Pore Size

  • 5 microns: Regular type, suitable for basic scenarios such as ordinary infusion and traditional Chinese medicine injections;
  • 3 microns: Suitable for infusion of crystallizable and chemotherapeutic drugs;
  • 1.2 microns: Suitable for pediatric patients, immunocompromised patients and high-purity drug infusion;
  • 0.2 microns: Bacterial-grade filtration, suitable for scenarios with high sterility requirements such as ICU and oncology departments.

2. By Function

  • Regular type: Basic filtration, cost-effective;
  • Light-proof type: Suitable for photosensitive drugs;
  • Dual-layer filtration type: Balances large particle and bacterial filtration, suitable for critically ill patients;
  • Fat emulsion-specific type: Suitable for fat emulsion infusion to avoid blockage.

3. Key Applicable Groups

It is especially suitable for neonates, the elderly, immunocompromised patients, critically ill patients, as well as those receiving chemothera
